UV Water Purifiers Guide

Having access to clean water is essential to staying healthy. Contaminants such as bacteria, pesticides and high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) can affect your immune system. So, we have a complete guide to explain the basic steps necessary to settle on the right UV water purifiers for you.

What Type of Purifier Is Right for You?

The type of purifier you get depends on the kind of water you have in your area. You can check for TDS by using a TDS meter. Total Dissolved Solids usually consist of an excess of calcium, magnesium, sulphate, nitrate and sodium.

For TDS above 200 ppm (parts per million), you need a Reverse Osmosis purifier. If your water has a 50-200 ppm TDS level, it is considered suitable for drinking.

However, a UV purifier will be ideal for an additional layer of purification.

Advantages and Disadvantages of UV Water Purifiers

Advantages

  • UV purifiers use a UV lamp to penetrate Ultraviolet rays that eradicate bacteria by targeting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing.
  • UV purification is a safe and efficient method to remove pathogens, parasites and fungi without deteriorating the taste or odour of the water. It does not add any additional substances, so you don’t have to worry about consuming toxic by-products!
  • Having a UV water filter will cost you much less than buying water bottles. It has a low overall maintenance cost and requires the UV lamp to be changed every six months.
  • The fast filtration process effectively removes 99.99% of bacteria.

Disadvantages

  • While UV filters can kill viruses and parasites, they do not treat hard water or remove dissolved solids.
  • They also need electricity to operate, unlike gravity-based purifiers. Remember to check the TDS level of your tap water before buying a UV purifier.

Things You Need to Consider Before Buying a UV Water Purifier

Maintenance

Storage tanks that are easy to clean are ideal for household use.

Some purifiers come with detachable tanks to help you in cleaning. Any extra filters installed in the purifier need to be checked as well.

UF filters should be changed every year, whereas carbon filters need to be replaced every six months.

Additional Features

There are purifiers available with additional features such as carbon filters that overcome the issue of poor taste and odour in your water.

Some purifiers are additionally designed to warn you when your UV lamp stops working. These built-in alarms make the purifiers safe and ensure that you always get pure water.

Installation requirements

You can choose between wall mountable and tabletop purifiers according to your convenience.

It’s better to consider the dimensions of the purifier to find the best spot for its installation. Also, it is best to settle on an area that is comfortably approachable for easy servicing and maintenance.
