Gravity Water Purifiers Guide
One of the essential household items to have in your home is a water purifier. It can keep you healthy by preventing you from consuming contaminants such as bacteria and viruses. You can follow our Gravity Water purifiers guide to make the right decision!
What Type of Water Purifier Should You Get?

The gravity water purifiers you should settle for depends on your source of water and its TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level. Total Dissolved Solids consist of organic matter such as calcium, sodium and magnesium. You can check your water’s TDS using a TDS meter.
You may get municipal water from lakes and rivers with TDS up to 200 ppm (parts per million). Groundwater, which comes through tube wells, has TDS from 200-2000 ppm.
Your water TDS may fluctuate daily if you receive your water from multiple sources.
For TDS higher than 200 ppm, it is essential that you get an RO purifier.
0-200 ppm TDS is considered safe for consumption, but it still may be contaminated by pathogens.
So, it’s best to use a gravity-based or UV water purifier to treat your water.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Gravity Water Filters
Gravity Water filters contain activated carbon or Ultrafiltration technology to purify water. Ultrafiltration membranes have pores small enough to remove bacteria, whereas activated carbon absorbs pollutants present in water. These filter cartridges are sometimes used alongside stainless steel mesh and sediment filters to remove sand and silt.
Gravity filters get their name from the way they function. Water naturally moves from the higher section to the lower one after passing through a UF membrane.
This purification method does not require electricity to operate, so it has a low overall maintenance cost. There is no chlorine or any other harmful by-product in the water as it is not chemically purified.
You should know, however, that gravity water filters do not filter out hard water. For this reason, you should make sure that your water TDS is ideal for using this method of purification.
Things You Need to Consider Before Buying A Gravity Water Filter
Storage Capacity
Water filters may be available with different storage capacities.
The one you get depends on the number of people in your house.
5-8 litres of storage is ideal for 2-4 family members.
These numbers are based on the fact that a single person consumes 2 litres of water every day.
Maintenance
It is best to go for a low-maintenance water filter for your home. Remember that sediment filters and carbon filters need to be replaced every six months. UF membranes, along with mechanical and electrical parts, need a replacement every year.
You can choose a purifier with a detachable tank to make it easier to clean.
